For me, one of the most difficult parts of living with someone else is deciding what to cook each night for dinner. When I lived alone I’d grab take out on the way home, eat leftovers or (gasp!) even have a bowl of cereal for dinner.

Now that I live with my husband (a man that is always hungry), I want to make sure I am feeding him a well balanced and delicious meal.

It can be hard to be creative after a long day of work, especially when you find a recipe online and then open you fridge or pantry to find you are missing half the ingredients. On the flip side, I also hate investing in all the ingredients in order to try out a new recipe and then have a fridge of leftover ingredients that I can’t figure out what to do with.

This is why when I discovered Culiniste, I was jumping for joy. Culiniste is a weekly grocery delivery service. They offer a once-a-week subscription service where they deliver all the fresh ingredients you need to make delicious meals at home, in exactly the right proportions (no more leftover ingredients!!).

How does Culiniste Work?

Each week the culinary team creates original recipes using premium, seasonal ingredients. You choose how many people you need to feed (boxes come ready for 2 or 4 people) and what kind of food you like to eat. Culiniste delivers your box of food right to your doorstep! The box is packaged in a refrigerated bag so it stays fresh all day if you’re not home.

When you open your box, you will find bags labelled with each meal and detailed recipe cards. Each recipe card has easy to follow instructions, along with pictures. It should only take you around 35 minutes to prepare your meal using the fresh and healthy ingredients provided by Culiniste. Each meal ranges from 500-700 calories per serving so you can feel confident that you are serving your family something healthy.

My Culiniste Experience

I tried out a one week subscription to Culiniste. I started by logging on to the website and choosing the two person plan. You can go to the recipes section of the site to see what will be shipping out the following week and choose your three meals. I love that Culiniste considers everyone’s personal tastes and uses a variety of meat, gluten free and vegetarian options. I logged onto my account on a Sunday afternoon, chose my three recipes and on Tuesday when I came home from work my box was sitting on my porch.

The great thing about Culiniste’s ingredients is that everything is fresh for a week so you can space out your meals. This is great for us since sometimes we aren’t home for dinner so we knew we had a full week to enjoy the meals before they spoiled.

My box came with the following recipes: Pan-Seared Bavette Steak, Seared Tilapia with Moroccan-Spiced Jerusalem Cous Cous and Chipotle Chicken Chilaquiles.

Culiniste Seared Tilapia

We started with the Tilapia just because I was really interested in trying the Jerusalem Cous Cous since it was not an ingredient I had ever seen or cooked with before. The meal was fast and easy to prepare and the instructions and pictures were really helpful. With all the ingredients measured out for you and labelled, it really cut out any guesswork. I knew my biggest critic would be my food loving husband…who cleared his entire plate and couldn’t stop talking about his delicious meal for the rest of the evening.

Culiniste Chicken

The second recipe we tried was the Chipotle Chicken Chilaquiles. This one was the most complex, but the one I was most excited for because I love Mexican inspired food. What I enjoyed about this recipe was that we could control the heat by using all or just some of the chipotle peppers in adobo sauce. I think this one was my favourite recipe to make, mostly because I felt like a real chef making my own crispy tortilla strips!

Culiniste Steak

The final recipe was a favourite of my husband because it was literally a meat and potatoes recipe (with a twist). I have never had a bavette cut of meat, but it cooked quickly and was a really tender steak. The steak was perfectly paired with some rosemary sweet potatoes and a light salad.

As we finished the final meal in our Culiniste package, I felt inspired. I had tried recipes I had never tried before and used ingredients that were new to me. I really enjoy cooking and this experience really amplified my desire to try new recipes. My husband helped me in the kitchen to make most of the recipes and it was a fun activity to cook together.

I would definitely recommend giving Culiniste a try! A two person plan costs $59 per week, including tax and shipping and a four person plan costs $115 per week, including tax and shipping. Culiniste currently delivers in Quebec and Ontario.'
